Kazakhstan, with its vast landscapes and rich culture, offers a unique travel experience. I had the opportunity to visit this fascinating country twice, first in December 2022 and then again in December 2023. My first trip was a memorable winter adventure, taking me through the bustling city of Almaty and the frosty capital, Astana. Here’s my detailed itinerary and experience from my December 2022 trip, where I navigated the extremes of Kazakhstan’s winter weather.
Day 1-3: Discovering Almaty
ALMATY Nestled at the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains, Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan and serves as its cultural and economic hub. Known for its leafy avenues and picturesque scenery, Almaty blends Soviet-era architecture with modern developments, creating a unique urban landscape.
The city offers a plethora of attractions, from vibrant bazaars and historical landmarks to serene parks and lively entertainment spots. In winter, Almaty transforms into a snowy wonderland, offering visitors a magical experience against the backdrop of its majestic mountains.
Arrival in Almaty I arrived in Almaty on December 1st. The city welcomed me with chilly weather, with temperatures ranging from -2 to -5 degrees Celsius. Despite the cold, Almaty’s charm and vibrant atmosphere were heartwarming.
Exploring the City During my stay, I visited several key attractions:
- Zenkov Cathedral: This wooden cathedral, beautifully adorned, is a must-see. Its architecture is stunning against the winter backdrop.

- Green Bazaar: A bustling market where I got to experience the local flavors and vibrant culture of Almaty.
- Kok-Tobe Hill: Offering panoramic views of the city, it’s a great spot for a winter stroll and to enjoy some local delicacies.

Where to Stay in Almaty as a Tourist:
- City Center (Almaly District): Ideal for first-time visitors, this area is close to major attractions like Zenkov Cathedral, Green Bazaar, and Republic Square.
- Bostandyk District: A modern area with plenty of shopping centers, restaurants, and cafes. It’s also near the botanical garden and offers easy access to Kok-Tobe Hill.
Tips for Almaty
- Dress in layers to stay warm.
- Public transportation is efficient and budget-friendly.
Day 4-6: Experiencing Astana’s Winter Wonderland
Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, is a testament to futuristic vision and architectural marvel. Renamed Nur-Sultan in 2019, the city is known for its striking skyline, featuring innovative buildings designed by world-renowned architects. Astana’s rapid development over the past few decades has turned it into a symbol of Kazakhstan’s ambition and progress.
The city’s landmarks, such as the Bayterek Tower and the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, reflect a blend of cultural heritage and modernity. Despite its extreme winter temperatures, which can drop to -34 degrees Celsius at night, Astana captivates visitors with its unique charm and resilience.
Journey to Astana On December 4th, I traveled to Astana, the capital city, known for its modern architecture and severe winter climate. The temperature here was a stark contrast to Almaty, plummeting to -34 degrees Celsius at night.
Astana Highlights
- Bayterek Tower: This iconic monument offers breathtaking views of the city. The indoor observation deck was a warm refuge from the outside cold.

- Khan Shatyr: A unique shopping and entertainment center, perfect for escaping the freezing temperatures.
- Palace of Peace and Reconciliation: A pyramid-shaped building symbolizing unity and peace, an architectural marvel worth visiting.

Where to Stay in Astana as a Tourist:
- Left Bank (New City): This area is home to most of the city’s modern landmarks, including Bayterek Tower and the Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center. It’s ideal for tourists looking to explore the new developments and architecture.
- Right Bank (Old City): Offers a more traditional experience with historical sites, local markets, and a more relaxed atmosphere. It’s great for those who want to experience the cultural heritage of Astana.

Surviving the Cold in Astana
- Wear thermal clothing and a good quality coat to handle the extreme cold.
- Limit your outdoor activities and take breaks indoors to warm up.
Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is a country of diverse climates, so the best time to visit depends on the type of experience you’re looking for:
- Spring (April to June): This is one of the best times to visit Kazakhstan. The weather is mild, and the landscapes are lush and green. It’s an excellent time for sightseeing, trekking, and exploring the natural beauty of the country.
- Summer (July to September): Summer is perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and visiting the national parks. The weather is warm, especially in Almaty, making it ideal for exploring the city and nearby mountains.
- Autumn (October to November): Fall brings cooler temperatures and beautiful autumn foliage. It’s a great time to visit for those who enjoy mild weather and want to avoid the summer crowds.
- Winter (December to March): If you’re a fan of winter sports or want to experience a true winter wonderland, visiting in winter is ideal. Almaty and Astana offer unique winter experiences, from skiing in the mountains near Almaty to witnessing the snowy landscapes of Astana.
