In February 2025, I visited Ho Chi Minh City with my wife. This was my second time in Vietnam โ€” earlier I had explored Hanoi in the north, and this time, we chose the energetic south. With 18 countries already explored in my travel journey, Vietnam continues to impress me with its culture, history, and street life.

Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) is alive 24/7. From its war museums to food stalls, colonial buildings, and wild nightlife, the city offers a raw, exciting experience that blends tradition with modern energy. Hereโ€™s a detailed list of the best things to do in Ho Chi Minh City, based on my personal journey:

1. Visit the War Remnants Museum

A deeply moving museum that reveals the brutal reality of the Vietnam War through graphic photographs, weapons, and preserved vehicles. Itโ€™s emotional but essential for understanding the countryโ€™s recent history and the strength of its people.

2. Explore Ben Thanh Market

A colorful market thatโ€™s ideal for local shopping and street food. You can find souvenirs, clothing, handicrafts, and more. Try iconic dishes like phobanh mi, and Vietnamese iced coffee here. The buzzing atmosphere gives you a real taste of local life.

3. Discover the Cu Chi Tunnels

This network of narrow underground tunnels shows how Vietnamese fighters lived and moved during the war. You can crawl inside some parts of the tunnel and see real traps, bunkers, and hidden entrances. It’s both thrilling and educational.

4. Enjoy a Saigon River Dinner Cruise

Spend an evening cruising along the Saigon River with live music and a traditional dinner. The views of the skyline, lit up at night, are magical. Itโ€™s one of the most relaxing and romantic things to do in the city.

5. Stroll Around Nguyen Hue Walking Street

This vibrant pedestrian boulevard is perfect in the evening. Street performers, snacks, and crowds of locals make it a fun and friendly place to enjoy Ho Chi Minhโ€™s youthful energy.

6. Try Vietnamese Coffee at a Local Cafรฉ

Whether itโ€™s strong black coffee or the famous ca phe sua da (iced coffee with condensed milk), Vietnamโ€™s coffee culture is rich and flavorful. Sit at a street-side cafรฉ or find a hidden spot in an alley and just enjoy people-watching.

7. Visit the Independence Palace

A preserved government building from the 1960s, this place played a key role at the end of the Vietnam War. Its architecture and war rooms are impressive and tell the story of political events during that era.

8. Join the Hip Hop Bus Night Tour

One of the most unique experiences in Ho Chi Minh! The Hip Hop Bus is a party on wheels โ€” with a DJ, flashing lights, and upbeat music. The bus drives through the cityโ€™s major landmarks while everyone dances and enjoys the wild vibe. Itโ€™s a great way to see the city at night with energy and fun.

9. Visit Saigon Central Post Office

This is one of the most beautiful colonial buildings in the city, designed by Gustave Eiffel (the man behind the Eiffel Tower). Inside, youโ€™ll find vintage telephone booths, old maps, and a lovely curved ceiling. Itโ€™s a perfect photo stop and a reminder of the cityโ€™s French past.

10. See the Saigon Opera House

An elegant colonial-era building where you can enjoy local shows, ballets, and traditional Vietnamese performances. Even if you donโ€™t attend a show, the architecture alone is worth a visit. It adds a classy touch to the modern chaos outside.

11. Experience the Nightlife at Bui Vien Street

Also known as the backpacker streetBui Vien is wild, loud, and full of energy. At night, the street becomes a party hub with bars, clubs, loud music, street food, and travelers from all over the world. Whether you want to dance, drink, or just enjoy the street scene โ€” this is the place to be after dark.
