Planning a Macau itinerary? During my recent trip to Hong Kong, I decided to take a day trip to Macau — and honestly, it was one of the best decisions of my trip.
Macau is just around 1 hour away by ferry and feels completely different from Hong Kong. Portuguese buildings, colorful streets, casinos, and historic sites — all in one day.
Here’s my complete experience, including ferry details, places I visited, and tips for you.
How I Went from Hong Kong to Macau?

I took a morning ferry around 10:00 AM from Hong Kong to Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal.
There are two main ferry operators:
- TurboJET
- Cotai Water Jet
Ferry Duration: About 55–60 minutes
Arrival Terminal: Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal
Immigration process was smooth and simple. Just carry your passport.
I returned back to Hong Kong around 8:00 PM by ferry.

Why Visit Macau?

Macau is known as:
- The “Las Vegas of Asia”
- A former Portuguese colony
- A UNESCO heritage city
You will see a mix of Chinese and Portuguese culture everywhere.
Places I Visited in Macau (Day Trip Itinerary)
Since I reached around 11 AM, I had almost a full day to explore.
1. Senado Square
Senado Square is the heart of Macau.
Beautiful Portuguese-style buildings, colorful tiles, and a lively atmosphere make this place very special.
You can just walk around, click photos, and enjoy local snacks.
2. Ruins of St. Paul’s
The most famous landmark of Macau —
Ruins of St. Paul’s
Only the front façade remains, but it looks absolutely stunning.
It gets crowded, so try to visit early.
There are small streets around this area where you can try free food samples.
3. Monte Fort
Near Ruins of St. Paul’s, you can walk up to
Monte Fort
From the top, you get a beautiful panoramic view of Macau city.
Entry is free.
4. Venetian Macau
In the afternoon, I visited
The Venetian Macao
This place is HUGE.
Inside you will see:
- Artificial canals
- Gondola rides
- Luxury shops
- Beautiful ceiling artwork
Even if you don’t gamble, it’s worth visiting just to see the architecture.
5. Macau Tower (Optional)
If you have time, you can visit
Macau Tower
It’s famous for:
- Skywalk
- Bungee jump
- City views
I didn’t do the activities, but many tourists go for adventure sports.
Transportation Inside Macau

From Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, you can:
- Take free hotel shuttle buses
- Use public buses
- Take taxi
I used a combination of walking and free shuttle buses (very convenient and budget-friendly).
Budget for a Day Trip
Approximate cost:
- Ferry return ticket: 300–400 HKD (depends on operator & timing)
- Food: 100–150 HKD
- Local transport: Mostly free shuttles
- Entry tickets: Many attractions are free
Macau is slightly expensive but manageable for a one-day trip.
Important Tips for Hong Kong to Macau Day Trip
- Carry your passport (immigration required).
- Start early (10 AM ferry was perfect for me).
- Wear comfortable shoes (lot of walking).
- Keep Hong Kong Dollars or Macau Pataca.
- Check last ferry timing — I returned around 8 PM comfortably.
Is One Day Enough for Macau?

Yes, for major attractions — one day is enough.
If you want to explore more casinos, islands, or relax slowly, you can stay one night.
For me, a day trip was perfect and very smoot
My Hong Kong to Macau day trip was simple, easy, and unforgettable. The mix of Portuguese heritage, modern casinos, and beautiful streets makes Macau unique.
If you are visiting Hong Kong, I highly recommend adding Macau to your itinerary.
