How to Travel from Hong Kong to Macau (Complete Guide + My Day Trip Experience)

Macau is one of the easiest international destinations to visit from Hong Kong. Located just across the Pearl River Delta, Macau is famous for its Portuguese heritage, giant casinos, historic streets, and delicious food. Because it is so close, many travelers visit Macau on a day trip from Hong Kong, just like I did.

Macau is a Special Administrative Region of China, similar to Hong Kong. It sits about 60 km from Hong Kong on the western side of the Pearl River Delta.

Even though both are part of China, Hong Kong and Macau have separate immigration systems, so you will need to go through immigration when traveling between them.

Macau is well known for:

  • The Ruins of St. Paul’s
  • Senado Square
  • Portuguese architecture
  • Huge luxury casinos
  • Amazing street food and egg tarts

Because it’s so compact, it’s perfect for a 1-day trip.

  1. Ferry (most popular)

My Hong Kong to Macau Day Trip Experience

I personally visited Macau from Hong Kong as a day trip by ferry.

Here’s exactly how my day went:

  • I took the 10:00 AM ferry from Hong Kong to Macau
  • The journey took about one hour
  • Immigration was very quick and simple

After arriving in Macau, I explored several places including:

  • Senado Square
  • Ruins of St. Paul’s
  • The casino area in Cotai
  • Local food streets

Macau is quite small, so you can see many attractions within one day.

After spending the whole afternoon exploring, I returned to Hong Kong by ferry at around 7:00 PM.

Overall, the trip was very easy, smooth, and perfect for a day visit.

2. Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge Bus

Another way to reach Macau is via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB), the longest sea bridge in the world.

Travel Time

Around 45 minutes by shuttle bus.

How It Works

  1. Travel to HZMB Hong Kong Port
  2. Pass through immigration
  3. Take the Golden Shuttle Bus
  4. Arrive at Macau Port

Ticket Price

Around HKD 65 (daytime).

This option is often cheaper than the ferry.

However, it requires a bit more transportation planning compared to the ferry.

3. Helicopter (Luxury Option)

Immigration Requirements

Because Hong Kong and Macau have separate systems, you must pass through immigration.

In most cases you need:

  • Passport
  • Visa (depending on nationality)

Many nationalities receive visa-free entry to Macau for 30–90 days.

Immigration usually takes 10–20 minutes.

Is a Day Trip to Macau Worth It?

Yes, absolutely.

Macau is one of the best day trips from Hong Kong because:

  • Travel time is only about 1 hour
  • Transportation is frequent
  • The city is small and easy to explore
  • There are many historical and cultural attractions

In one day, you can experience a unique mix of Chinese and Portuguese culture, historic landmarks, world-class casinos, and fantastic food.

Traveling from Hong Kong to Macau is very easy, whether you choose the ferry, bridge bus, or even a helicopter.

During my trip, I chose the ferry, leaving Hong Kong at 10 AM and returning around 7 PM, which gave me plenty of time to explore Macau in one day.

If you are visiting Hong Kong, I highly recommend adding Macau to your itinerary. It’s a fascinating destination with a unique culture and atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else in Asia.
