I visited Singapore in February 2025, and like most travelers, my first question after landing was simple — what is the easiest and cheapest way to reach the city centre from Changi Airport?
After using it myself, I can confidently say that the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is the best, cheapest, and most reliable way to travel from Singapore Changi Airport to the city centre. It’s clean, well organized, and very easy to use, even if it’s your first time in Singapore.
In this blog, I’ll explain everything step by step so you can do it confidently.

Why Use MRT from Changi Airport?
- Cheapest way to reach the city
- Very clean, safe, and tourist-friendly
- Well connected to all major areas
- No traffic issues
- Easy even for first-time visitors
Singapore’s public transport system is one of the best I’ve used in my travels across many countries.

Where Is the MRT Station at Changi Airport?
After immigration and baggage claim, follow the “Train / MRT” signs.
- The MRT station is located at Changi Airport Station (CG2)
- It is connected to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3
- From Terminal 1 or Terminal 4, you can take a free Skytrain or shuttle bus to reach the MRT station
The signs are very clear, and airport staff are helpful if you get confused.
Step-by-Step: Changi Airport to City Centre by MRT
Step 1: Buy a Ticket or Card
You have three easy options:
Option 1: Standard Ticket
You can buy a single journey ticket from the ticket machines.
Option 2: EZ-Link Card
Best if you plan to use MRT and buses multiple times. Available at airport counters.
Option 3: Contactless Card
You can directly use international debit or credit cards (Visa / Mastercard) to tap in and out. This is what I used.

Step 2: Take the Train from Changi Airport
- Board the East West Line (Green Line) from Changi Airport
- This train goes only up to Tanah Merah Station
Travel time: Around 10 minutes
Step 3: Change Train at Tanah Merah Station
At Tanah Merah, you must change trains.
- Get down from the train
- Cross the platform
- Board the Westbound Green Line train towards Tuas Link
No need to exit the station or buy another ticket.
Reaching Major City Areas from Changi Airport
Here’s how long it takes from Changi Airport using MRT:

| Chinatown | 40–45 minutes | East West + Downtown Line |
| Orchard Road | 40 minutes | East West + North South Line |
| Clarke Quay | 40 minutes | East West + North East Line |

MRT Operating Hours from Changi Airport
- First train: Around 5:30 AM
- Last train: Around 11:30 PM
If you arrive late at night, MRT may not be available, and you’ll need to use taxi or airport bus.
How Much Does MRT Cost from Changi Airport?
- Approximate fare: SGD 2 to SGD 3
- Depends on your destination
- One of the cheapest airport transfers in Asia
Compared to taxis, which can cost SGD 25–40, MRT saves a lot of money.
Luggage Rules on MRT
- You can carry suitcases on MRT
- Avoid peak hours (7–9 AM and 5–7 PM) if possible
- Use lifts instead of escalators when carrying heavy luggage
During my trip, I traveled with a medium suitcase without any issues.

Is MRT Better Than Taxi or Bus?
MRT vs Taxi
- MRT is much cheaper
- Taxi is faster but expensive
- MRT avoids traffic
MRT vs Airport Bus
- MRT is faster
- Bus is good if your hotel is far from MRT
For budget travelers, MRT is the best option.

Traveling from Singapore Changi Airport to the city centre by MRT is easy, affordable, and stress-free. If you want to save money and travel like a local, this is the best option.
I personally recommend MRT for all budget travelers and first-time visitors.
