4 Days Itinerary for Samarkand, Uzbekistan

I visited Samarkand in 2024 and explored its timeless beauty, historical sites, and cultural charm. Here’s a well-paced 4-day itinerary based on my experience.

1. Registan Square
The most iconic landmark of Samarkand, featuring three beautifully decorated madrasahs — Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, and Tilya-Kori. A must-visit for architecture lovers and history enthusiasts.

2. Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum
Final resting place of Amir Timur and his descendants. The mausoleum features a striking blue dome and some of the finest interior tilework in the city.

3. Walk around the surrounding old streets
Explore the peaceful historical lanes around Registan and Gur-e-Amir to experience the local life and atmosphere.

1. Bibi-Khanym Mosque
Once among the largest mosques in the Islamic world, built by order of Amir Timur. Though partially restored, its scale and design are still impressive.

2. Siab Bazaar
Traditional market near the mosque, full of energy and color. A great place to see daily life and sample local food and snacks.

3. Relax around the mosque and bazaar area
Soak in the cultural vibe and take a peaceful walk in the surrounding squares and gardens.

1. Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis
A complex of ornate tombs, beautifully tiled and set on a hillside. One of the most spiritual and photogenic places in the city.

2. Afrosiab Museum
Dedicated to ancient Samarkand before the Islamic era. It showcases artifacts, frescoes, and the history of the Afrosiab area.

3. Afrosiab Hill Area
An open space with visible ancient ruins and panoramic views. Walk around the historical remains of pre-Timurid Samarkand.

1.Ulugh Beg Observatory
Built in the 15th century by the astronomer-king Ulugh Beg. It houses remains of a massive sextant and a small museum.

    2. University Boulevard
A leafy and peaceful avenue ideal for a relaxing stroll. The area has parks, monuments, and local cultural spots.

    3. Samarkand Paper Workshop (Koni Ghil)
Visit this traditional workshop where paper is still handmade using ancient methods from mulberry bark.
