Where to Take the Bus in Chiang Mai

All buses from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai depart from the Chiang Mai Arcade Bus Terminal, located about 4 km from the Old City.

There are two terminals (Arcade 2 and Arcade 3) right next to each other — both handle northern routes, and you can easily find signs showing “Chiang Rai.”

You can take a Grab taxi or red songthaew from your hotel to the bus terminal. It usually takes around 10–15 minutesand costs about 80–150 THB.

There are several reliable bus companies running daily between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

Greenbus Thailand

The most popular and trusted operator on this route. Greenbus runs several classes of service throughout the day.

  • First Class (32 seats): Comfortable seats, air conditioning, and a short rest stop.
  • Economy Class: Budget option with fewer amenities but still clean and safe.

  • Departure Frequency: Every 30 to 60 minutes (from early morning to evening).

Nakhonchai Air (Occasional Service)

Some routes may also be operated by Nakhonchai Air, but Greenbus remains the most consistent and widely available option between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.


Arrival in Chiang Rai

All buses arrive at Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 1, located right in the city center, near the Night Bazaar and several hotels.

Some VIP or long-distance buses may stop first at Chiang Rai Bus Terminal 2 (about 7 km south of town), but there are free or low-cost songthaews connecting Terminal 2 to the city center.

Make sure to check your ticket before boarding so you know where you’ll arrive.

Tip: During weekends or high season (November–February), book at least a day in advance — VIP seats fill up fast.


What to Expect on the Bus

  • Comfort: All buses are air-conditioned and comfortable. VIP buses have wide seats and extra legroom.
  • Rest Stop: Some buses make a short 10–15 minute stop midway for snacks and toilets.
  • Scenery: You’ll see beautiful mountains, forests, and small villages along the way.
  • Snacks: VIP and First Class buses often provide a bottle of water and a small snack.
  • Luggage: You can keep small bags with you and larger luggage below the bus.

It’s an easy, safe, and scenic journey that most travelers really enjoy.

What to Do After Arriving in Chiang Rai

Once you arrive, you’re already near the heart of the city. From Bus Terminal 1, you can easily reach:

  • Chiang Rai Night Bazaar – 2 minutes’ walk
  • Clock Tower – 5 minutes’ walk
  • White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) – 20 minutes by taxi or Grab
  • Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) – 10 minutes by taxi

If you arrive at Terminal 2, you can take a songthaew (shared truck) to the city center for about 20–30 THB per person.

If you want the best balance of comfort and price, go for the Greenbus First Class or VIP option. The seats are very comfortable, the ride is smooth, and the buses are always on time.
