2 Weeks Kazakhstan Itinerary: Almaty & Astana (Nur-Sultan)

I visited both Almaty and Astana (Nur-Sultan) during my trip to Kazakhstan, and this 14-day itinerary is based on my own travel experience. If you’re planning to visit the country, this plan will help you explore the best of both cities without rushing — and only includes activities I personally did.

Days 1–7: Almaty

Almaty is Kazakhstan’s largest city — vibrant, green, and surrounded by mountains. I spent time exploring nature, local markets, Soviet architecture, and mountain spots. Here’s how you can structure your 7 days:

Activities in Almaty:

  • Kok-Tobe Hill – Take the cable car for panoramic views of the city and enjoy the amusement area.
  • Shymbulak Ski Resort – Whether it’s winter or summer, the ride up is scenic and peaceful. You can take the gondola from Medeu.
  • Medeu Ice Skating Rink – A famous outdoor rink in a picturesque mountain valley.
  • Green Bazaar – Experience local flavors, snacks, dry fruits, and souvenirs.
  • Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral) – A beautiful wooden church in Panfilov Park.
  • Panfilov Park – Relax, walk around, and enjoy local life.
  • Arbat Street – A great place for shopping, street art, and local food.
  • Big Almaty Lake (day trip) – A stunning turquoise lake surrounded by mountains.
  • Try Local Food – I had amazing Kazakh dishes like beshbarmak, plov, and local dumplings.

✦ Stay suggestion: Choose a hotel or apartment in the city center — near Dostyk Avenue or Zhibek Zholy — for good walkability.

Days 8–14: Astana (Nur-Sultan)

Astana is modern, futuristic, and very different from Almaty. I was there in 2022 and really enjoyed the contrast — wide roads, bold architecture, and open spaces.

Activities in Astana:

  • Baiterek Tower – The city’s symbol. Go to the top for panoramic city views.
  • Khan Shatyr Mall – A tent-shaped shopping and entertainment center with a beach inside.
  • Hazrat Sultan Mosque – One of the largest and most impressive mosques in Central Asia.
  • Nur-Astana Mosque – A stunning gold-domed mosque in the heart of the city.
  • Palace of Peace and Reconciliation – A glass pyramid designed for interfaith dialogue.
  • Independence Square & Kazakh Eli Monument – A large square with symbolic structures.
  • Nurzhol Boulevard Walk – This is where you’ll find all the futuristic buildings.
  • Astana Opera House (optional walk) – I passed by here during my trip — it’s a beautiful area to stroll.

✦ Stay suggestion: Stay near Nurzhol Boulevard or around Baiterek Tower for central access to all landmarks.

Travel Tips Between Cities:

  • Almaty to Astana (Nur-Sultan):
    • Domestic flight (1.5 hours) is the fastest and most convenient.
    • Train option (11–14 hours) available for a scenic overnight ride.
