During my trip to Kazakhstan, I visited both Almaty and Astana (Nur-Sultan). If you’re planning a 7-day visit, this itinerary is perfect for exploring the highlights without rushing. It includes only the experiences I personally enjoyed.

Days 1–4: Almaty – The Cultural & Natural Heart of Kazakhstan

Almaty is a lively city surrounded by mountains and filled with markets, parks, and historical sites.

Things I Did in Almaty:

  • Kok-Tobe Hill – Took the cable car for an amazing city view and relaxed at the top.
  • Shymbulak Ski Resort – Rode the gondola and enjoyed the mountain atmosphere (not just for skiing!).
  • Medeu Ice Rink – Famous for its mountain setting.
  • Zenkov Cathedral (Ascension Cathedral) – A colorful wooden church inside Panfilov Park.
  • Green Bazaar – Explored local snacks, dry fruits, and bought souvenirs.
  • Panfilov Park – A peaceful city park to enjoy a walk.
  • Arbat Street – Spent time shopping and watching street performances.
  • Big Almaty Lake – Took a day trip to this stunning turquoise lake surrounded by nature.
  • Kazakh Cuisine – Tried local dishes like plovbeshbarmak, and manty.

Stay Tip: I recommend staying near Dostyk Avenue or Zhibek Zholy for easy access to the main spots.

Days 5–7: Astana (Nur-Sultan) – The Futuristic Capital

Astana offers a completely different vibe — modern, spacious, and full of impressive architecture. I spent 3 days here exploring its landmarks.

Things I Did in Astana:

  • Baiterek Tower – Went to the top for panoramic views of the city.
  • Khan Shatyr – Explored this unique tent-style mall, even walked to its indoor beach area.
  • Hazrat Sultan Mosque – A massive white mosque, very peaceful and beautiful.
  • Nur-Astana Mosque – Another impressive mosque with golden domes.
  • Palace of Peace and Reconciliation – Saw this striking glass pyramid, a symbol of unity.
  • Nurzhol Boulevard Walk – Took long walks through the city’s architectural center.
  • Independence Square & Kazakh Eli Monument – Explored this area and took photos.

Stay Tip: Choose a hotel near Baiterek Tower or Nurzhol Boulevard to stay close to most landmarks.

How to Travel Between Almaty and Astana:

  • I recommend taking a domestic flight (around 1.5 hours) — quick and easy.
  • You can also take a train (around 12 hours), if you want a slower scenic experience.
