In February 2025, My wife & I started my Bali trip in Kuta, one of the most popular and convenient places to stay, especially for first-time visitors. It was my introduction to the island, and while many people consider Kuta touristy, I found it energetic, vibrant, and full of life. It offers a mix of beautiful beaches, shopping, nightlife, and affordable stays—ideal for budget and mid-range travelers.

What is Kuta Famous For?

Kuta is known for its:

  • Long sandy beaches and sunsets
  • Surfing culture (great for beginners)
  • Affordable shopping and markets
  • Lively nightlife and beach bars
  • Street food and international cafes
  • Proximity to the airport (only 15 mins away)

It’s a great base for travelers arriving in Bali, especially for backpackers, solo travelers, or anyone looking for some excitement.

Best Things to Do in Kuta, Bali

Here are the top experiences and activities I explored or recommend in Kuta:

1. Relax at Kuta Beach

One of the most well-known beaches in Bali. You can relax, surf, or just watch the stunning sunset. Vendors walk around selling drinks, corn, and coconuts.

2. Try Surfing

Kuta is the perfect place to learn how to surf. There are plenty of local instructors offering lessons right on the beach.

3. Enjoy the Sunset at Beach Bars

Head to Coast Beach ClubThe Boardwalk, or Rosso Vivo for drinks and dinner with a sea view.

4. Shopping in Kuta

  • Beachwalk Shopping Center – modern mall with local and international brands
  • Kuta Art Market – local souvenirs, clothes, and handicrafts
  • Street-side stalls – for budget shopping and bargaining

5. Waterbom Bali

One of Asia’s best waterparks—perfect if you’re traveling with friends or family. I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did!

6. Explore Nightlife

  • Sky Garden – Multi-level club and rooftop bar
  • Engine Room – Affordable, fun, and packed
  • Beach bars and casual pubs along Poppies Lane II

7. Take a Day Trip from Kuta

Kuta’s location is perfect for short day trips:

  • Uluwatu Temple + Kecak Fire Dance
  • Jimbaran Bay seafood dinner
  • Tanah Lot Temple at sunset

Where to Stay in Kuta

I stayed in Kuta because it’s affordable and close to the airport—perfect for arriving or departing from Bali. Whether you’re a budget traveler or looking for a resort, there’s something for everyone.

I booked my Kuta stay on Agoda and found great deals even during high season.

How to Reach Kuta

Kuta is the most accessible area in Bali:

  • From Ngurah Rai Airport: 10–15 minutes by taxi or Grab
  • From Ubud: 1.5–2 hours by car
  • From Canggu or Seminyak: 30–45 minutes

Transport is easy—use GrabGojek, or book a driver for tours.

Best Time to Visit Kuta

Kuta is a year-round destination, but the dry season (April to October) is ideal. I visited in February 2025, during the rainy season, and still had plenty of sunshine and beach time with fewer tourists.

Tips for Visiting Kuta

  • Watch your belongings at the beach—don’t leave things unattended
  • Try street food, but choose busy stalls for freshness
  • Bargain politely at local markets
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen when swimming
  • Walk around or rent a scooter to explore nearby areas

Why I Recommend Kuta

Kuta may be busy and commercialized, but it has its charm—especially if it’s your first stop in Bali. The beach vibes, the food, and the nightlife made it a fun and easy-going start to my journey. It’s perfect for relaxing after a long flight or kicking off your adventure with energy.

If you’re looking for affordable stays, sunsets, beginner surfing, and nightlife, then Kuta is the place to be.

I stayed here for a few nights and had no regrets—a great introduction to Bali’s beach culture and a very convenient location.
