Vang Vieng, a small town in Laos, is a paradise for adventure seekers and nature lovers. Surrounded by towering limestone karsts, lush greenery, and the Nam Song River, it offers breathtaking scenery and thrilling outdoor activities. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or stunning viewpoints, Vang Vieng has something for everyone.

Having visited Vang Vieng with my wife in February 2025, I’ve put together this guide on the best things to do based on our experience.

Tubing down the Nam Song River is one of Vang Vieng’s most iconic experiences. You can rent a tube, float along the river, and take in the stunning views of limestone cliffs. If you prefer something more active, kayaking is a great way to explore the river while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

For the best panoramic views in Vang Vieng, hike up to Nam Xay Viewpoint. The short but steep trek rewards you with breathtaking landscapes of limestone mountains, lush valleys, and a motorcycle placed at the top for a unique photo opportunity. Sunrise or sunset is the best time to visit.

Vang Vieng is home to several Blue Lagoons, known for their crystal-clear waters and beautiful surroundings. The most popular is Blue Lagoon 1, but if you want a quieter experience, head to Blue Lagoon 3, which is less crowded and offers a more peaceful atmosphere.

Located near Blue Lagoon 1, Tham Phu Kham Cave is a must-visit. Inside, you’ll find a golden reclining Buddha and impressive limestone formations. Bring a flashlight, as some parts of the cave are dark, and be prepared for a short climb to reach the entrance.

If you’re looking for adventure, rent an ATV or buggy and explore the off-road trails around Vang Vieng. The ride takes you through local villages, rice fields, and dirt paths with stunning mountain views.

In the evening, take a stroll through the Vang Vieng Night Market. It’s a great place to shop for souvenirs, handmade crafts, and local products while enjoying the lively atmosphere.

Vang Vieng is one of the cheapest places in the world to go hot air ballooning. Floating above the limestone mountains and the Nam Song River at sunrise or sunset is an unforgettable experience.

While Kaeng Nyui Waterfall is the most well-known, there are several other hidden waterfalls around Vang Vieng waiting to be explored. These natural spots are perfect for a refreshing dip and escaping the heat.

For rock climbing enthusiasts, Vang Vieng offers incredible limestone cliffs with climbing routes for all skill levels. You can join a guided climbing tour for a safe and thrilling experience.

After all the adventures, take some time to relax at one of the many riverside cafés in Vang Vieng. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, watch the sunset over the Nam Song River, and take in the stunning surroundings.
