Traveling from Vientiane to Vang Vieng by bus is a budget-friendly and scenic way to experience the beautiful Laotian countryside. In February 2025, my wife and I took the South Chai Travel bus, which took around 3 hours, and we booked our tickets online via 12Go for $10 per person. Our ticket also included a pickup service from our hotel, making the journey even more convenient.
Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide to help you plan your trip.
Step 1: Booking Your Bus Ticket

• Where to Book: I booked my ticket online via 12go, a reliable platform for bus and train bookings in Southeast Asia.
• Ticket Price: $10 per person (prices may vary slightly based on season and demand).
• Bus Operator: South Chai Travel, a well-known operator for this route.
• Included Service: Hotel pickup in Vientiane, making the trip hassle-free.
Tip: Booking online ensures you get a confirmed seat, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Step 2: Pickup & Departure from Vientiane

• Hotel Pickup: The South Chai Travel bus service provides free pickup from hotels in Vientiane.
• Pickup Time: Confirm the pickup time when booking, usually 30–60 minutes before departure.
• How It Works: A tuk-tuk or minivan will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to the main bus departure point.
Tip: Be ready at your hotel’s reception at least 10 minutes before the scheduled pickup time.
Step 3: The Bus Journey from Vientiane to Vang Vieng
• Total Duration: 2.5 to 3 hours
• Route: The bus follows Route 13, a well-maintained road passing through scenic landscapes, small villages, and lush green mountains.
• Comfort & Amenities:
• Air-conditioned bus
• Comfortable reclining seats
• Some buses may provide bottled water
• A short rest stop along the way
Tip: Carry some snacks and water, as rest stops might be limited.
Step 4: Arriving in Vang Vieng

• Bus Arrival Point: South Chai Travel buses usually drop passengers at the Vang Vieng bus station, which is about 1 km from the town center.
• Getting to Your Hotel:
• Tuk-tuks are available outside the bus station (cost $2–3$).
• Some hotels offer free pickups, so check in advance.
Tip: If you’re staying near the Nam Song River, it’s best to take a tuk-tuk for convenience.
Taking the South Chai Travel bus from Vientiane to Vang Vieng is an easy, affordable, and scenic way to travel. With a quick 2.5 hour journey and a hotel pickup service, this option is both convenient and comfortable. Once in Vang Vieng, you’ll be ready to explore its stunning landscapes, adventure activities, and vibrant atmosphere.
