Old Post Office – Ho chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is a bustling metropolis filled with history, culture, and incredible street food. Having traveled to 18 countries, I always look for destinations that offer a mix of history, local experiences, and great food. In February 2025, I visited Ho Chi Minh City with my wife, and this itinerary is based on our firsthand experiences to help you make the most of your trip.

Day 1: Historical & Cultural Landmarks

  • Independence Palace (Reunification Palace) – Historic site where the Vietnam War officially ended.
  • Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon & Saigon Central Post Office – Stunning French colonial architecture, perfect for photos.
  • War Remnants Museum – A must-visit to understand the impact of the Vietnam War.
  • Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts – Showcases Vietnamese art in a beautiful colonial building.
  • Nguyen Hue Walking Street – Lively area filled with locals, performers, and great city vibes.

Day 2: Markets & Local Experiences

  • Ben Thanh Market – Great place for shopping and trying Vietnamese street food.
  • Binh Tay Market (Chinatown) – Explore a bustling local market and authentic Chinese-Vietnamese food.
  • Thien Hau Temple – A stunning Chinese temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea.
  • Jade Emperor Pagoda – One of the most beautiful and spiritually significant temples.
  • Bitexco Financial Tower (Saigon Skydeck) – Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city.

Day 3: Cu Chi Tunnels & Relaxation

  • Cu Chi Tunnels (1.5-hour drive from the city)
    • Discover the underground tunnel system used during the Vietnam War.
    • Crawl through tunnels, see war-era traps, and learn about soldier life.
  • Relax at a local spa or massage parlor – Perfect way to unwind after exploring the tunnels.
  • Saigon River Dinner Cruise – Enjoy a scenic cruise with traditional Vietnamese performances.

Day 4: Food & Nightlife

  • Street Food Tour – Try must-eat dishes like pho, banh mi, and fresh spring rolls.
  • Explore local coffee culture – Visit a traditional Vietnamese coffee shop for egg coffee or iced milk coffee.
  • Bui Vien Street – Experience Ho Chi Minh City’s nightlife with bars, live music, and a great atmosphere.
  • Final shopping & souvenirs – Revisit Ben Thanh Market or other local stores for last-minute souvenirs.

Final Tips

  • Transport: Use Grab (ride-hailing app) for easy travel.
  • Weather: Expect heat and humidity—dress light and stay hydrated.
  • Currency: Vietnamese Dong (VND), though some places accept USD.
