As a passionate traveler and blogger, I love exploring destinations using public transport to save money and experience local life. In February 2025, I visited Vientiane, the capital of Laos, and figured out the best way to get from Wattay International Airport to the city center by bus. If you’re looking for an affordable and convenient way to reach downtown, this guide will help you.

Airport Shuttle Bus Service

Vientiane offers an airport shuttle bus that connects Wattay International Airport to the city center. Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Bus Number: Airport Shuttle Bus (sometimes referred to as Bus #44)
  • Operating Hours: Approximately 7:30 AM – 11:00 PM
  • Frequency: Every 60-90 minutes
  • Duration: Around 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic
  • Fare: About 40,000 LAK (approximately $1.80 )
  • Payment Method: Cash (preferably in Lao Kip)

Bus Route & Stops

The shuttle bus stops at several key locations, including:

  • Wattay International Airport (Departure)
  • Talat Sao Bus Station (Main city bus terminal)
  • Various stops near hotels, guesthouses, and landmarks like the Presidential Palace

If your accommodation is near Talat Sao or the Mekong riverside, this bus is a great option.

Where to Find the Bus at the Airport?

Once you exit the arrivals hall, follow the signs for public transport (go to right side). The airport shuttle bus stop is located outside the terminal, near the taxi stand. If you’re unsure, ask airport staff or locals—they are usually helpful.

Alternative Transport Options

If the bus timing doesn’t work for you, here are other options:

  • Tuk-tuks – Local three-wheeled vehicles, fare negotiable (around 50,000 LAK)
  • Taxis & Ride-hailing Apps – Around 80,000 LAK ($3.80)
