Batu Caves is one of the must-visit spots in Kuala Lumpur, famous for its stunning limestone caves and the massive golden statue of Lord Murugan. If you’re staying in Bukit Bintang—the heart of KL’s shopping and entertainment district—you can easily get there by bus without spending much. Here’s a quick and easy guide on how to travel from Bukit Bintang to Batu Caves like a local.
Why Take the Bus?
Traveling by bus is an affordable and fun way to explore the city, especially if you’re on a budget. From Bukit Bintang, you’ll get to see more of Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant streets and neighborhoods on the way to Batu Caves.
Step 1: Getting to Bukit Bintang Bus Stop
First, you’ll want to make your way to Bukit Bintang bus stop, which is conveniently located along the main strip. The area is well-connected with buses and the MRT, making it easy to navigate.
- Tip: If you’re staying in a hotel in Bukit Bintang, the bus stop should be within walking distance.
Step 2: Taking the Bus to Batu Caves

To get to Batu Caves, you’ll need to hop on RapidKL bus number 173. However, the direct bus service to Batu Caves starts from Pasar Seni bus hub, so first, you need to take a bus from Bukit Bintang to Pasar Seni.
Here’s what you can do:
- Catch a Go KL City Bus (Green Line) from Bukit Bintang to Pasar Seni. It’s a free service and runs frequently.
- Once you arrive at Pasar Seni, transfer to RapidKL bus number 173.
- Cost: The bus ride from Pasar Seni to Batu Caves will cost about RM 3-4. The Go KL City Bus is free.
- Travel Time: The total journey from Bukit Bintang to Batu Caves, including the transfer, takes about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic.
Step 3: Arriving at Batu Caves
After about 45 minutes on the 173 bus, you’ll arrive at Batu Caves. You’ll know you’re there when you spot the towering statue of Lord Murugan and the vibrant, colorful stairs. From the bus stop, it’s a short walk to the entrance.
Take your time exploring the caves, climbing the 272 steps, and visiting the temple inside. Don’t forget to explore other caves like the Ramayana Cave or sign up for a guided tour of the Dark Cave if you’re feeling adventurous.
Pro Tip: Watch out for the cheeky monkeys—they’re fun to watch but can get a bit grabby, especially if you’re holding food!
Step 4: Heading Back to Bukit Bintang
Once you’ve finished exploring, head back to the same spot where you got dropped off and catch bus 173 back to Pasar Seni. From Pasar Seni, you can again take the Go KL City Bus (Green Line) to return to Bukit Bintang for free.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer a faster return trip, you can catch the KTM Komuter train from Batu Caves station to KL Sentral and then take the MRT back to Bukit Bintang.
