Last year, while traveling from Abu Dhabi to Alexandria, Egypt, I found myself with an 18-hour layover at Kuwait International Airport. Instead of spending the time in the airport, I decided to explore Kuwait City. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, here’s a guide on how you can make the most of your layover and see some of the best sights in Kuwait City.

Getting Out of the Airport
Upon landing at Kuwait International Airport, I quickly went through immigration. As an engineer in Dubai, I was able to obtain an eVisa for Kuwait, making the process smooth and hassle-free. Many travelers can also obtain a visa on arrival, but it’s best to check the latest visa requirements beforehand. Once through, I headed to the city center, which is about 20 kilometers from the airport.

Transportation Options:
- Taxi: The quickest and most convenient option. Taxis are available at the airport and cost around 8-10 KWD (approx. 25-32 USD) to the city center.
- Bus: For budget travelers, buses are available but less frequent. The journey takes about 45 minutes and costs less than 1 KWD. The bus network in Kuwait is operated primarily by the Kuwait Public Transport Company (KPTC) and CityBus. Buses run on fixed routes covering most parts of the city and its suburbs. The buses are air-conditioned, which is a relief in Kuwait’s hot climate.

Bus Details:
- Bus Routes: Buses from the airport (Route 13 and Route 501) go to various parts of Kuwait City, including key stops like Farwaniya, Khaitan, and the main bus station in Mirqab.
- Frequency: Buses run every 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the route and time of day. It’s best to check the schedule in advance or ask at the airport information desk.
- Tickets: You can buy tickets directly from the bus driver or use a rechargeable GoSmart card, which can be topped up at various locations in the city.
24-Hour Unlimited Ride Bus Pass: For travelers who plan to explore extensively, I recommend getting a 24-hour unlimited ride bus pass. This pass allows unlimited rides on all KPTC and CityBus routes for a full day, providing a cost-effective and convenient way to get around the city. The pass can be purchased at major bus stations, select retailers and to the Drivers.
Morning: Start with the Iconic Kuwait Towers
Kuwait Towers: Start your day with a visit to the Kuwait Towers, the most iconic landmarks of Kuwait. The towers open at 9 AM, and you can enjoy panoramic views of the city from the observation deck. The entry fee is around 3 KWD (approx. 10 USD).
Breakfast: There’s a café in the towers where you can grab a light breakfast while enjoying the view.

Noon: Visit the Souk Al-Mubarakiya
Souk Al-Mubarakiya: For a taste of traditional Kuwaiti life, visit the Souk Al-Mubarakiya. This bustling market is one of the oldest in Kuwait and a great place to wander around, buy souvenirs, and sample local foods.
Lunch: Enjoy a traditional Kuwaiti meal at one of the many eateries in the souk. Dishes like machboos (spiced rice with meat) and mutabbaq (stuffed pastry) are must-tries.

Afternoon: Discover Kuwait’s Cultural Heritage
Kuwait National Museum: After lunch, head to the Kuwait National Museum to learn about the country’s history and culture. The museum is open from 8 AM to 8 PM, and the entry fee is quite affordable.
Sadu House: Located nearby, Sadu House showcases traditional Bedouin crafts and weaving. It’s a small but fascinating museum that gives a glimpse into Kuwait’s nomadic heritage.
Late Afternoon: Relax by the Waterfront
Al Shaheed Park: In the late afternoon, visit Al Shaheed Park, a large urban park with beautiful landscaping, museums, and walking trails. It’s a great place to relax and unwind after a day of sightseeing.
Kuwait Corniche: Alternatively, you can take a stroll along the Kuwait Corniche, a scenic waterfront area with beautiful views of the Persian Gulf.
Evening: Return to the Airport
After a full day of exploring, it’s time to head back to the airport. Make sure to leave enough time for traffic and airport security. If you took a taxi, it’s easy to find one from any of the main attractions, or you can arrange for a pickup.
Tips for a Smooth Layover:
- Luggage: Check if your airline offers a luggage storage service at the airport, so you don’t have to carry your bags around the city.
- Currency: Make sure to have some Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD) with you for small purchases and transportation.
- Weather: Kuwait can be very hot, especially in the summer. Dress comfortably, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated.
Exploring Kuwait City during a layover can be a rewarding experience, allowing you to see a new destination and make the most of your travel time. Safe travels!
