During my visit to Hanoi in September 2022, I opted for the public bus, specifically Bus 86. The experience was smooth and budget-friendly, giving me a chance to see a bit of the city as I traveled. The bus was comfortable and provided a direct route to the Old Quarter, where I was staying. This option not only saved me money but also allowed me to dive into the local rhythm of Hanoi right from the start of my trip.
Arriving at Noi Bai International Airport, you might be wondering how to make your way to Hanoi’s bustling city center without burning a hole in your wallet. Fear not, as this guide provides an in-depth look at the most budget-friendly options available for your journey from the airport to the heart of Hanoi.
Overview of Transportation Options
Noi Bai International Airport, located approximately 25 kilometers from Hanoi’s city center, offers several transportation choices. Here’s how you can make the trip without breaking the bank.
Public Bus

Taking the bus is not only the most economical way to travel from the airport but also offers a glimpse into local life. Two primary bus routes connect the airport to the city: Bus 86 and Bus 88. Bus 86 is a direct route to Hanoi’s Old Quarter, while Bus 88 provides access to various key areas in the city.
To catch Bus 86 or Bus 88, head to the bus stop just outside the arrivals area of the airport. Tickets can be purchased directly from the bus driver, and the fare typically ranges between 30,000 to 50,000 VND (Vietnamese Dong). The journey usually takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.
Taxi

If you prefer a bit more comfort and don’t mind spending a little extra, taxis are a convenient option. Taxis provide a direct route to your destination, and the journey usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Several reputable taxi companies operate at the airport, including Mai Linh and Vinasun.
To avoid overcharging, use a metered taxi or agree on a fare before starting your trip. The typical fare to the city center ranges from 300,000 to 400,000 VND. Make sure to confirm the taxi’s identification and meter functionality.
Ride-Sharing Services
For those who prefer using modern technology, ride-sharing services like Grab offer a convenient alternative. Grab operates similarly to taxis but with the added benefit of fare transparency and ease of payment through the app.
Simply download the Grab app, input your destination, and you’ll receive a fare estimate before confirming your ride. Pickup points at the airport are clearly marked, and the usual fare to the city center is comparable to, or slightly more than, a standard taxi fare.
Additional Tips
When choosing your transportation, consider the time of day and your specific needs. During peak hours, traffic congestion can affect travel times, so plan accordingly. If you’re arriving late at night or early in the morning, taxis and ride-sharing services might be more reliable compared to the public bus schedule.
Ensure you have a small amount of Vietnamese Dong for transactions, as not all services accept credit cards. Familiarize yourself with basic Vietnamese phrases or use a translation app to ease communication.
Traveling from Hanoi Airport to the city center doesn’t have to be expensive. By opting for public buses, taxis, ride-sharing services, or airport shuttles, you can find a transportation method that suits both your budget and preferences. With a little planning and awareness, you’ll be on your way to exploring Hanoi’s vibrant streets and rich culture in no time. Safe travels!
